Matt Well is a veteran communications and grassroots campaign strategist whose background blends extensive expertise in public affairs and issue advocacy with a unique understanding of how government interacts with today’s capital markets.

Prior to co-founding The Herald Group, Matt served as Director of Public Affairs for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) during the most active period since the Commission’s establishment.  In addition to serving as the principal spokesperson, Matt was responsible for developing the Commission’s internal and external communications programs and providing strategic counsel to the Chairman.

Matt previously served as the Director of Public Affairs and Field Operations for the American Tort Reform Association (ATRA) where he directed political and electoral strategies, including independent expenditure campaigns, around state judicial and attorney general elections and legislative initiatives. Matt managed national allies, affiliated state coalitions and grassroots groups in 44 states, implementing coordinated legislative and lobbying programs. 

Matt also served as the Director of Communications and Issue Advocacy for the Republican Leadership Council (RLC).  In this capacity, Matt managed all aspects of the group’s independent expenditure campaigns in both federal and state elections, including strategic planning, opposition research, polling, message development, advertising production and media placement with a total budget of over $7 million.  

Matt also worked as an aide to U.S. Senator Bob Dole (R-KS) in both his Senate office then on his 1996 Presidential campaign where he served as the Regional Field Director for Midwestern states and worked on the Iowa Caucuses building a coalition of grassroots activists. 

Matt holds an MBA from the Johns Hopkins University and BA from the University of Kansas.
