Welcome to The Herald Group, Michael! A Q&A Session with THG’s Newest Vice President

Last week we sat down with Michael Stwarka, our newest Vice President to learn more about his background, experiences, and interests. Join us as we dive in and get to know him a bit better.

Background and Experience:
Michael brings a wealth of experience, having previously worked in the House of Representatives for four members of Congress and on the campaign trail. From his start as an intern for Rep. Rob Portman to his roles as Legislative Director for Sen. Markwayne Mullin and Legislative Assistant to Gov. Jeff Landry, he has gained invaluable insights into the inner workings of government. Adding him to THG’s bench strengthens our firm’s ability to craft strategies to influence policymakers.

Favorite Foods and Hobbies:
Despite a busy schedule (like so many of us in D.C.), Michael still finds time to indulge in the great Washington, D.C. food scene. While he enjoys the finer dining in the city, he also appreciates the basics. Wondering what the best pizza in DC is? He has quite the list of recommendations as it’s one of his favorite foods. Outside of work, you'll likely find Michael running, playing golf, or cheering on his favorite Cincinnati sports teams with his wife, Melonye.

Favorite Book:
One of the highlights of our conversation was learning about his favorite book, "On the Road" by Jack Kerouac. Michael praises it as one of America's greatest epics, citing Kerouac's vivid depiction of post-World War II society and the freedom of cross-country travel. The book's stream-of-consciousness style and portrayal of real-life friendships makes it stand out.

Career Insights:
When asked about the most valuable lesson learned in his career, Michael emphasized the importance of showing up and working hard, regardless of the task at hand. He attributes much of his success to the guidance of mentors and strives to pay it forward by mentoring younger coworkers. We’re excited about the investment he’s already putting into our staff.

Washington, DC Favorites:
Even after years of being a resident of Washington, DC, Michael still finds enjoyment in the city's fast-paced nature and vibrant culinary scene. He’s managed to cultivate strong friendships within the food and beverage service industry and enjoys exploring local spots.

Top 3 Spots in DC:

    1. Le Diplomate - Recommended Dish: Veal Escalope over spaghetti with extra sauce (off-menu item)

    2. Barcelona Cathedral Heights

    3. Pearl Dive Oyster Palace
