The Herald Group is looking for an experienced communicator and client manager to join their Washington, D.C. office as Vice President.

The successful candidate will have agency management experience and possess a strong background in policy communications. Heavy focus will be on client management and providing strategic direction and guidance to account leads and clients to help achieve their public affairs objectives.

Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of experience in public policy/advocacy communications experience in an agency, non-profit, government or corporate setting. Agency experience preferred
  • Proven experience in successfully managing public affairs and communications activities for multiple clients
    Successful track record of leading, motivating and building effective account teams (experience managing a practice or department with P &L responsibility a plus)
  • Solid understanding of public relations and marketing principles, strategic planning and implementation
  • Strong client relations skills with ability to anticipate client needs and quickly solve problems
  • Exceptional verbal communication and writing skills, with the ability to write both strategically and creatively under tight deadlines
  • Ability to express ideas clearly and confidently
  • Outstanding, proactive, detail-oriented project management skills. Ideal candidate will have managed the implementation of complex, integrated advocacy campaigns. This includes excellent time management, budgeting and organizational skills, and ability to juggle conflicting priorities and meet objectives consistently with minimal internal stress
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to manage crises, implement creative and innovative solutions and demonstrate “big picture” thinking is a must
  • Strong research and organizational skills, and the ability to proactively deliver the highest level of service to our clients.

Responsibilities:

Work may include, and is not limited to, any or all of the following:

  • Drive strategic direction of clients’ campaigns and practice area
  • Plan and direct integrated, issues management communications programs to include public affairs, earned and social media, grassroots/grasstops strategy, design and production for advertising, direct marketing and collateral materials
  • Manage and motivate dedicated account leads and team members
  • Foster client-agency relationships to build trust and become a valuable resource to client
  • Continually build understanding and knowledge of clients’ business, competitive and political environment; apply this information in presenting strategically focused public affairs strategies and recommendations
  • Conduct research on new business opportunities and other agency priorities as needed
  • Complete understanding of key media arenas within particular issues/industries; high awareness of current events
  • Effectively manage or develop full range of written materials including press releases, byline articles, speeches, client correspondence, white papers, reports and new business proposals; superior writing and editing skills for all agency- and client-generated documents; manage a variety of high level documents for a variety of audiences
  • Initiate proactive new business outreach to qualified agency prospects
  • Participate in the research, writing, and presentation of new business proposals
  • Take advantage of internal and external networking opportunities to enhance professional development and agency/office visibility
  • Other duties as needed.

Public Affairs Director

The Herald Group is looking for a highly motivated, career oriented individual looking to gain further experience in public affairs and strategic communications.

A mid-level position, the director will be responsible for the day-to-day execution of client team activities with increasing client interaction, interfacing with client contacts, executing on new account programs, client initiatives and media relations projects, contributing to plans and strategies and overall servicing of client accounts in close collaboration with a Vice President. Responsibilities:

Work may include, and is not limited to, any or all of the following:

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of communications programs
  • Oversee the day-to-day management of client programs and client relationships, including media monitoring, issue research, project updates and internal team management
  • Serve as primary contact and lead for certain client projects
